    Vicente Bertrán de Lis y Tomás fue uno de los personajes clave de la revolución li- beral valenciana, convirtiéndose después, en el Cádiz de las Cortes y en Madrid durante el primer período absolutista del reinado de Fernando VII, en un importante contratista de su- ministros al ejército y acaudalado financiero. Durante el Trienio constitucional derivó hacia posiciones liberales exaltadas, fue alcalde de la capital de España y en 1823 se exilió, prime - ro a Londres y posteriormente a París. Regresó a España en 1834, residiendo nuevamente en Madrid, donde continuó con el mismo tipo de negocios, convirtiéndose en uno de los comer- ciantes y financieros más ricos de la capital de España durante el reinado de Isabel II. Que - dan muchas zonas de sombra en la biografía de este personaje y este artículo pretende pro - porcionar algunos datos sobre los orígenes de su fortuna en los primeros años del siglo XIX, cuando todavía residía y trabajaba en Valencia.

    Vicente Bertrán de Lis y Tomás was one of the central figures of the Valencian Li- beral revolution, becoming later, in the city of Cádiz during the Cortes and in Madrid by the first Absolutist period of the reign of Ferdinand VII, an important contractor of provisions to the army and a wealthy financier. Between 1820 and 1823 he became an exalted liberal, was mayor of the capital of Spain and in 1823 was exiled and resided first in London and later in Paris. He came back to Spain in 1834 and resided again in Madrid, where he developed the same economic activities as before, becoming one of the wealthier traders and financiers of Spain in the reign of Elizabeth II. There remain many shaded areas in his biography and this article strives for giving some information about the origins of his wealth in the first years of the 19th century, when he still lived and worked in his native Valencia.
