El trabajo analiza tres influyentes interpretaciones del imperio español. Estas son las del francés Montesquieu y las de los británicos Adam Smith y Jeremy Bentham. Los dos primeros trataron de identificar la naturaleza de de los fundamentos sobre los que aquél descansaba, que juzgaron a la vez distintos de Francia y Gran Bretaña e inadecuados para favorecer el crecimiento económico y el desarrollo de la sociedad moderna. Bentham extrapoló algunas de estas ideas para construir una particular interpretación sobre la imposibilidad de imperios liberales en el mundo Atlántico.

Three relevant interpretations of the Spanish empire are considered in this essay: that of the French philosopher Montesquieu and those of the British Adam Smith and Jeremy Bentham. Montesquieu and Smith tried to identify the true nature of the principles of the Spanish empire -which they both deemed to be different from those principles of French and British imperialism and also absolutely inadequate to promote economic growth and the development of social modernity. Bentham used some of these ideas in order to elaborate a theory of the impossibility of liberal empires in the Atlantic World
