    La historiografía portuguesa ya ha prestado alguna atención a los que, en los siglos XVI y XVII, se han dedicado a enseñar a leer, escribir y contar, los maestros de niños. Los procesos del Tribunal de la Inquisición son una importante fuente, hasta ahora inexplorada por los estudiosos, para el conocimiento de esta realidad. Este artículo estudia el caso de 17 maestros de niños que, entre 1626 y 1738-1739, comparecieron en los tribunales de la Inquisición de Lisboa, Coimbra y Évora.

    The Portuguese historiography had already approached to some extent those who, in the 16th century, devoted themselves to teaching reading, writing and arithmetic, the so-called masters of boys. The files of the Inquisition Court are an important source, so far unexplored by scholars, of the knowledge of that reality. This paper approaches the masters of 17 boys who, between 1626 and 1738-1739, were taken to the courts of the Holy Office of Lisbon, Coimbra and Évora.
