    Entre España y el Magreb hay una relación de vecindad muy antigua como resultado de la proximidad física y de varios siglos de intercambios de todo tipo.

    Hoy en día la migración es uno de los aspectos clave de dicha relación puesto que residen en España más de 846.002 magrebíes con permiso de residencia, marroquíes en un 92%. La migración actual se inicia con la descolonización y tiene un hito importante en 1991, con la imposición del visado. A pesar de ello el colectivo magrebí ha multiplicado su número desde entonces. Al final de los años noventa los marroquíes eran con diferencia el principal colectivo extranjero; desde entonces han crecido menos que el conjunto de los extranjeros pero siguen siendo la principal nacionalidad.

    Por su distribución, su estructura y la antigüedad de su migración los magrebíes están más asentado que otros colectivos. A pesar de la crisis este grupo va a seguir aumentando por la migración económica y familiar, por la entrada de personas con visado de estancia o, en menor medida, por las entradas de clandestinas. A medida que se van asentando en lo social, lo económico y lo jurídico, asistimos a la emergencia de un colectivo mixto destinado a jugar un creciente papel en las complejas relaciones entre España y el Magreb.

    Spain and Maghreb have a very old relationship which is the result of a physical closeness and several centuries of all sorts of exchange.

    Nowadays, migration is one of the key issues in this relationship as more than 846.002 North-Africans currently live in Spain with a residence permit, 92% of them are Moroccan.

    Today's migration started with decolonization and there was a turning point in 1991, when visas where made compulsory. Despite of this, the North-African community has increased significantly since then. At the end of the 1990, Moroccans were by far the main foreign community in Spain. Since then it has gone up less than all the foreign groups together but they still are the main community of immigrants. The North-Africans are better established than other communities because of the way they settled, the structure of their communities and the long time they have migrated. Despite the economic crisis, this group is going to continue increasing because of family and economic migration, because people who have visas are going to come to Spain or, even though it is a minority, people are going to come to Spain illegally. At the same time as they are settling in social, economical and legal terms, we are also seeing the emergence of a mixed community which is going to play an important part in the complex relationship that links Spain and Maghreb.
