Origine et actualité du "systême agraire": retour sur un concept

    Among the many concepts used in farming systems research, the agrarian system – système agraire – stands out. First utilized by geographers, it was subsequently reworked by agricultural economists. The objective of this article is to trace the evolution of this original concept, reflect on the difficulties inherent to its use, and examine its relevance to agricultural research. After exploring the origins of this concept, the author analyzes its components in terms of constituting sub-systems and the challenges associated with the agrarian system approach in terms of boundaries and scales of analysis. Next he discusses the similarities and differences between this approach and others that are more commonly used by non-francophones.

    Parmi les concepts de l’analyse système en agriculture, celui de « système agraire » occupe une place à part. D’abord évoqué par les géographes dès les années 1950, il fut plus tard retravaillé par des agro-économistes. L’objet de cet article est de présenter ce concept original, et de réfléchir à la fois sur les difficultés inhérentes à son utilisation et sur l’intérêt qu’il présente. Après un bref historique de ce concept, cet article fait le point sur ses contours et ses frontières, puis analyse ses parties constituantes en termes de sous-systèmes constitutifs. Il conclut sur le positionnement de ce concept entre sciences de la vie et sciences sociales, et évoque les proximités identifiables avec certaines approches développées par des chercheurs non francophones.
