    The villages of Maramure country are probably the last remaining quasi entirely self-sufficient communities in Europe. The paper attempts to understand why this area has remained untouched by the changes that have occurred in other parts of Romania, in particular, how it has survived collectivisation, industrialisation and its entry into the modern world. The main factors involved are explained as are the contradictions which have occurred at the very heart of the system which have transformed ways of thinking, the landscape, the social and economic equilibrium of these communities thereby implying the end of the exception which they represented. The impact of new means of communication are evaluated and how these have undermined the mental universe and the ancient world of these communities by weakening the self-sufficient family which had, until then, attempted to remain and continue within a given environment.

    Les villages du pays Maramures en Roumanie rassemblent sans doute les dernières communautés quasi autarciques d'Europe. Nous avons plus particulièrement cherché à comprendre pourquoi ce territoire était jusque-là resté à l'écart des transformations touchant les autres régions roumaines, comment il avait survécu à la collectivisation, à l'industrialisation, et comment il entrait dans la modernité. Nous nous sommes efforcés d'en dresser un rapide tableau, puis de repérer et de suivre les lignes de fracture qui s'insinuent profondément jusqu'au c'ur du système, bouleversant les mentalités, le paysage, l'équilibre économique et social de ces communautés, et ce faisant, annonçant la fin de l'exception culturelle qu'il constituait. Nous nous sommes notamment attachés à cerner l'impact des nouveaux moyens de communication, la manière dont ils subvertissent rapidement l'univers mental et l'ancien monde de ces communautés, en attaquant les fondements de la famille autarcique qui s'organisait pour perdurer dans un environnement donné.
