In France statistics are often accused of lying, especially when they have been produced by the state. The paper considers current statistics concerning delinquency and insecurity. Following in the tradition of the study of public outcries, the paper intends to show how various social actors accuse police statistics of lying, and what social and cognitive means they employ to do this. The paper also examines the other side, that is how those who produce the figures defend themselves against such accusations. Although this essay cannot answer fully these questions which must remain open, this would also be the case for the actors themselves, it is nevertheless intended as a contribution to the clarification of the terms of the debate.

En France, les statistiques sont souvent accusées d'être mensongères, surtout lorsqu'elles sont produites par l'État. Cet article se penche sur le cas des statistiques actuelles portant sur la délinquance et l'insécurité. S'inscrivant dans la tradition de l'étude des dénonciations publiques, l'article entend montrer comment divers acteurs sociaux accusent les statistiques policières de mentir, et selon quelles opérations à la fois sociales et cognitives ils établissent leur point de vue. Inversement, il s'agit d'étudier comment les producteurs de ces chiffres se défendent de telles accusations. Si cette contribution ne saurait trancher un débat qui ne l'a toujours pas été par ses acteurs eux-mêmes, elle entend néanmoins considérablement en éclaircir les termes.
