Forty-four stool samples from children aged 0 to 5 years with giardiosis, from Guatemala City (Guatemala), were studied to determine Giardia duodenalis genotypes circulating in the urban area. A fragment of the tpi gene was amplifi ed, with subsequent RFLP of the product with RsaI to differentiate AI and AII subgenotypes. Assemblage B (63.6%) was the most prevalent, followed by assemblage AII (20.5%) and the mix of assemblages AII+B (15.9%). To our knowledge, this is the fi rst work on G. duodenalis genotyping in Guatemala, so it provides new data for giardiosis epidemiology.
