Según las teorías del neoliberalismo el sistema de oferta y demanda debería asegurar la mejor calidad de la enseñanza mediante la competencia entre las diferentes instituciones docentes estatales y privadas. El modelo neoliberal de educación también supone que con menor intervención económica por parte del Estado chileno las universidades mediante la competencia podrían convertirse en instituciones elitistas mediante el modelo de más competencia genera mejor calidad y más demanda por parte de los estudiantes. En este artículo queremos discutir las consecuencias que ha tenido el modelo neoliberal concretamente en el caso de las universidades de Chile donde la enseñanza universitaria se ha convertido en un mercado con muchos ofertantes y donde los estudiantes universitarios actúan como clientes. Después de muchos años con el modelo neoliberal en el campo de la educación universitaria se puede hacer la pregunta de si la competencia del mercado universitario ha creado universidades de más calidad.

According to the theories of neo-liberalism, the system of supply and demand should ensure the best quality of education through competition between different state and private educational institutions. The neoliberal model of education in Chile had the intention that with less economic intervention by the Chilean state, the universities through competition should become elitist institutions. This should be possible through the model consisting in competition generating quality. In this article I will discuss the consequences of the neoliberal model specifically in the case of the universities in Chile, where university education has turned into a market where the students are clients. After many years with the neoliberal model in the field of higher education you could ask whether the university market and the strong competition have created high quality universities.
