Este artículo argumenta acerca de la importancia que tiene para el derecho electoral el conocimiento de la teoría sobre los sistemas electorales y sus elementos. En primer término, se procura definir el sistema electoral, tanto en su sentido amplio como en su sentido estricto. La segunda sección se refiere a la relación de la teoría sobre el sistema electoral para el derecho. En el siguiente apartado se describen los efectos del sistema electoral sobre el sistema de partidos y sobre la representación. En la cuarta y la quinta sección se explican los elementos del sistema electoral en sentido estricto y la administración electoral, respectivamente. Finalmente, en la sexta sección se mencionan algunas líneas de análisis referente al diseño y reforma del sistema electoral

Article argues about the importance that knowledge of Electoral Systems Theory and its components have for Electoral Law. First, it procures to define the Electoral System, both in its broad and strict sense. Its second section refers to the relation of the Electoral System Theory for the Law. The following section describes the effects of the Electoral System on the Party System and on the Representation System. In the fourth and fifth section it explains the elements of the Electoral System in strict sense and the Electoral Administration, respectively. Finally, in the sixth section it mentions some lines of analysis concerning the Electoral System design and reform
