    En el artículo se presenta una síntesis de los resultados de un estudio que hemos realizado en el tema durante 2009, orientados a describir desde un punto de vista etnolingüístico las características de la lengua mapuche y sus hablantes en el contexto urbano de Santiago de Chile. Se consideran aspectos tales como la lealtad lingüística existente hacia la lengua, su vitalidad en el espacio urbano y las representaciones sociales que han construido los mapuche urbanos sobre su lengua originaria, profundizando en los determinantes socioculturales que definen tales coordenadas; relacionando la reflexión y representación social que los mapuche tienen de su lengua con los procesos de identidad en la urbe, eje discursivo que, para muchos, define la esencia del ?ser mapuche?. Incorporamos, además, datos relativos a la competencia lingüística efectiva en lengua mapuche, comparada con la declarada, tanto desde un punto de vista léxico como sintáctico, en un intento por tener datos referidos al rol que juega el saber lingüístico real en la definición del ?ser mapuche? y su uso como fuente de estatus y poder por parte de las comunidades y sus participantes. Desde este punto de vista, se muestra una baja competencia efectiva en la lengua, en correspondencia con su baja vitalidad, contrastando con su alto valor simbólico en tanto marcador de identidad y estatus.

    This paper presents a synthesis of the results of a study we carried out in 2009 that describes from an ethnolinguistic point of view the characteristics of the Mapuche language and its native speakers in the urban context of Santiago, Chile. Loyalty towards the language, its urban vitality, and the social representations that the Mapuche have constructed about their native language are considered, with particular emphasis on the sociocultural determinants that define these issues. In this way, we attempt to link the reflection and social representation that the Mapuche have of their language with the processes of identity in the city, a discursive hub for what defines the essence of ?being Mapuche.? In addition, we incorporate data about effective (as opposed to declared) linguistic competence, both syntactic and lexical, in order to have data regarding the role that actual linguistic knowledge plays in the definition of what it means to ?be Mapuche? and its use as a source of status and power by the Mapuche communities. From this point of view, a low degree of effective competence in the language can be seen which corresponds to its low language vitality and contrasts with its high symbolic value as a marker of identity and status.
