    O artigo discuti a moldagem da vida social nas zonas de contato, elegendo como ponto de reflexão o trânsito da população indígena entre os sertões do Espírito Santo e as vilas e povoados da província, no período entre 1798 e 1840. Esta dividido em duas partes. Na primeira, problematizo a história do Espírito Santo como uma zona de contato de longa duração e o transito de índios entre as fronteiras que supostamente separavam as vilas e os sertões. Na segunda, faço alguns apontamentos sobre o caráter híbrido e transcultural das organizações sociais das zonas de contato, tomando como exemplo a vila indígena de Nova Almeida.

    This paper discusses the moulding of the social life in the zones of contact, electing as a reflection problem the transit of the indigenous population between the backlands of Espirito Santo and the villages and the settlements, in the period of 1798 and 1840. It is divided into two parts. In the former one, I problematize the Espirito Santo history as a contact zone of long duration and the indigenous transit between the frontiers that supposedly separated the villages and the backlands. In the latter one, I make some notes about the hybrid and transcultural character of the social organizations of the contact zones, taking as example the indigenous village of Nova Almeida.
