    En este artículo se aborda qué es la mendacidad y se analiza la forma en que está presente en dos Novelas Ejemplares de Cervantes -La gitanilla y La ilustre fregona-.

    Se parte de las ideas de filósofos, literatos, psiquiatras y psicólogos para definir qué es mentir, sus implicaciones, su origen y los efectos que puede producir.

    Cada vez que se presenta algún aspecto sobre la mentira, se analiza la manera en que se ofrece al lector en las novelas antes mencionadas.

    Por último, se propone de forma muy breve si la mentira no será un medio no el medio que hace al lector cómplice de Cervantes en la construcción de la ficción

    This article reviews what is lying and how lies take a part in two Exemplary Novels from Cervantes.

    The starting point are the ideas of philosophers, writers, psychiatrists and psychologists regarding what does it mean �to lie�, its implications and origin and the effects that of such an action may cause.

    Once a matter concerning lying is presented, the analysis about how it works within these novels is brought to the reader�s attention.

    Finally, there is a brief reflection on the possibility of lies being the mean that will allow the reader to be in cahoots with Cervantes to build a fictional space
