This paper details the development in Australia of a model degree program that fully integrates Australia's industry determined vocational awards in hospitality or tourism with the rigor of a University business degree, delivering outcomes that place its graduates at a premium in the global employment market. It explains how the program evolved by considering student and employer needs first, and using these to break down the constraints inhibiting the recognition of industry-based professional skills as part of a University business degree. While there is little new in the old debate between vocation and education, this program has been able to start from first principles to establish a seamless and concurrent linkage between the workplace and the University for large scale teaching. Moreover, the paper explains how the entire approach is premised on a philosophy of life-time career learning. Whether the program is a success remains a test for the market, but the current indicators are highly positive, and the model itself is being duplicated by other disciplines covered in the University sector.
