Resumen de Puertos de México geoestratégicos y espacios clave. Una aproximación desde la perspectiva geográfica

Lilia Susana Padilla y Sotelo

  • español

The importance of the Mexican coastline transcends for its extension and position between two oceans, and the diversity of dynamic factors which lead into the development of ports in the current globalization context. This paper intends to reveal its geostrategic character and the role of Mexican ports within the national and international economic systems. A conceptual approach of the Mexico Coastal Region is given in terms of its territorial limits, determined by political decisions and the space frame for ports location, for those that are considered key spaces in the economy by means of its territorial and economic realm, marking a clear difference among those considered globalization nodes from those with a territorial function. Four Mexican ports out of twenty are emphasized, considering their outside bonds which explain the differences in their influence zones. An assessment of the economic direction of the main ports is made to show which type of economic activities have predominated in the harbor cities, given that the port activity is the axis its development.
