El efecto de la edad relativa (RAE) en la liga de fútbol española

    Antecedentes: El efecto de la edad relativa (Relative Age Effect, RAE), consiste en la menor presencia en un ámbito determinado de los nacidos en los últimos meses del año. Esta definición presupone que el corte de edad se produzca en enero, existiendo estudios que demuestran que el efecto también se produce cuando el corte se realiza en otros meses del año. En este caso la mayor presencia en ese ámbito la tendrán los nacidos inmediatamente después de esa fecha de corte.

    Los primeros estudios sobre la incidencia de la edad relativa en el deporte fueron los publicados por Barnsley, Thompson y Barnsley en hockey (1985).

    En el caso del fútbol, fueron Barnsley, Thompson, y Legault (1992).

    Objetivo: El objetivo de este trabajo es valorar si se produce el efecto de la edad relativa en el fútbol profesional en España, donde el corte de edad para la formación de las diferentes categorías es el del año natural. El análisis ha incluido a todos los futbolistas de la Liga de la temporada 2009-10.

    Resultados: El resultado de nuestro estudio confirma un importante efecto de la edad relativa en la principal competición profesional de fútbol en España, la Liga, donde el 61% de los jugadores son nacidos en el primer semestre del año.

    También se ha realizado el estudio del efecto diferenciando equipos, puestos en el campo y nacionalidad, obteniéndose algunos resultados muy significativos.

    El efecto de la edad relativa parece tener importantes implicaciones sociales e incluso económicas. Se impone un cambio de planteamiento en los actuales procesos de detección y selección de talentos, pues de este modo no sólo se tratará de manera más justa y coherente a los aspirantes más jóvenes, sino que las propias organizaciones podrán optimizar sus resultados invirtiendo en la promoción de los jugadores de sus propios equipos filiales más que en la adquisición de jugadores de fuera.

    Background: The relative age effect (RAE), consists of the less presence in a particular area of those born in the last months of the year. This definition assumes that the age split is made in January, but there are studies showing that this effect also occurs when the cutting is done in other months of the year.

    In this case the increased presence in this area will be for those born immediately after the cutoff date.

    Early studies on the impact of the relative age effect in sports were published by Barnsley, Thompson and Barnsley in hockey (1985) and Barnsley, Thompson y Legault in soccer (1992).

    Objective: The aim of this study is to assess whether the relative age effect occurs in professional football in Spain, where the different competition categories gather players born in the same year. The analysis has included all football players competing in the Liga during the 2009-10 season.

    Restults: The results of our study confirm an important relative age effect on the main professional football competition in Spain, Liga, where 61% of the players are born in the first half of the year. It has also been done the study segmenting by teams, positions of the players in the field of play and nacionality, obtaining some significant results.

    The relative age effect seems to have important social and economic implications. A change is needed in the current systems for the talent detection and selection, because this seems to be the way for not only being more fair and consistent to younger applicants, but for the organizations to be able to optimize their performance by investing in the promotion of their own junior players rather than acquiring senior ones from outside.
