Gutiérrez Solana is an artist whose rallying for the survival of tradition and whose vision of the world led him both, to reject the Regeneracionismo movement, and to break with the Academy's principles. This attitude toward color and perspective, as well as the deformation and outlining in his figures, creates a sense of restlessness in the observer, as it is impossible to distinguish reality from the unreal. Two of his paintings will be analyzed in this article, both in historical context and in pictorial terms: The showcases and The visitor and the showcases. These two pieces are extremely important due to their visibility and the moment they represent in Solana¿s career. In fact, they led to the discovery during the 1920s of Solana by the leaders of the «Arte Nuevo».
