Resumen de Estudio preliminar de la relación del tamaño corporal y la maduración testicular de Xiphophorus hellerii (Heckel, 1948)

  El pez cola de espada (Xiphophorus hellerii) es un Poecilido de gran importancia economica en el mercado acuarista siendo los machos los mas atractivos. Este estudio platea definir la relacion entre el tamano corporal y la maduracion testicular, con el fin de establecer la talla en la que los machos de X. hellerii poseen gonadas histologicamente aptas para la reproduccion. Se utilizaron 21 ejemplares machos de X. hellerii, los cuales se agruparon en tres rangos de tamano (Rango I de 2-3 cm, Rango II de 3.1-5 cm, Rango III de 5.1-8 cm), para cada grupo se tomaron siete individuos, con el fin de establecer variaciones en el desarrollo testicular en los diferentes grupos.

  Los peces se anestesiaron con MS-222 (0.5g/L) y se sacrificaron por seccion medular. A cada pez se le registro el peso corporal, el peso de las gonadas, longitud total, longitud estandar, longitud de la espada y caracteristicas fenotipicas como coloracion y forma de la espada. Las gonadas fueron fijadas en formaldehido al 4% a 4oC durante 5 dias, y luego se realizo el procesamiento para inclusion en parafina. Se realizaron cortes seriados de 5 um de espesor y se tineron con la tecnica H&E. Para el estudio morfometrico se establecio el numero de cistos en la gonada que contenian celulas de la linea germinal masculina en diferentes estadios de madurez (I, II, III, IV y V) en tres niveles de la gonada (anterior, medio y posterior) y en los tres rangos de tamano (Rango I, II y III). Se realizaron analisis de factores, regresion multiple y analisis de correlacion con el fin de evaluar si existian o no relaciones entre las variables evaluadas con los rangos de tamano. Esta investigacion permitio definir que la maduracion testicular es independiente del rango de tamano, pues en individuos de rango de tamano I se encontraron cistos con celulas en estadio V de maduracion.

  Las gonadas presentan cistos con celulas en diferentes estadios de maduracion en todos los niveles, ubicandose los cistos con celulas mas maduras generalmente en la parte central de la gonada y aquellos con celulas mas inmaduras hacia la periferia de la misma.

  The swordtail fish is an economically important Poeciliae in the hobbyist market being the males the most attractive. The aim of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between body size and testicular maturation, in order to establish the size at which males of X. hellerii have gonads histologically viable for reproduction.

  In this study was used 21 males of X. hellerii, which were grouped into three size ranges (range I 2-3 cm, Range II 3.1-5 cm and Range III 5.1-8 cm), for each group seven individuals were selected in order to establish the testicular development in the different groups. The fish were anesthetized with MS-222 (0.5 g/L) and sacrificed by spinal section.

  Each fish was recorded body weight, gonad weight, total length, standard length, length of the sword and phenotypic characteristics such as color and shape of the sword. The gonads were fixed in 4% formaldehyde at 4 °C for 5 days and processed for paraffin embedding. Serial cuts of 5 ìm thick and stained with H&E technique. For the morphometric study was established the number of cysts in the gonad containing male germinal cells in differents stages of maturity (I, II, III, IV and V) at three levels of the gonad (anterior, medial and posterior) and three size ranges (range I, II and III). Factor analysis, multiple regressions and correlation analysis to assess if there were or not relationships between the variables evaluated in the size ranges were performed. This research allowed defining that testicular maturation is independent of the size range, because was commonly found cists with cell at stage V of maturity in the size range I. The gonads have cells in different stages of maturity at all levels, locating usually more mature cysts in the central part of the gonad and the most immature to the periphery of it.
