• In agreeing to translate a given text, as well as in choosing one or another translation strategy, the translator takes an implicit stand on environmental questions, whether s/he is conscious of doing so or not. If s/he wants to bear his/her share of environmental responsibility, s/he should try to understand the consequences of his/her work and to avoid the most disastrous ones. A questionnaire on the environmental ethics of mostly Finnish translators suggests that most of them would be ready to shoulder responsibility in the broadest sense of the word, but sometimes it is difficult for them to earn a living without making compromises.
