This paper presents the evolutionary theories contained in José Rodríguez Carracido's works entitled La evolución en la química (1894) and "Filogenia química de la molécula albuminoidea" (1917). The most original aspects of his theory are put into the scientific context of his time: Spencer's evolutionary philosophy and Crookes and Plfüger's hypothesis supported by him. The interest of these works regarding the problems arisen by the introduction the evolutionary theories in Spain is highlighted, coming to the conclusion that despite these works show some anachronisms and speculations, they represent a coherent and valuable contribution at that time.
