Este artículo estudia el personaje romántico decimonónico de Margarita Gautier y su pervivencia como icono cultural del siglo XX en novela, teatro, ópera, televisión y cine. Analiza la pieza de Jardiel tanto como parodia de la exitosa novela de Dumas como en el contexto del teatro previo a la guerra civil; destacando la importancia que tuvo como consagración de este autor y ponderando hasta qué punto cumple con sus propósitos iniciales de renovar la escena española del momento. Se sitúa la obra dentro del conjunto de la producción de Jardiel, viendo cómo éste emplea sus recursos dramatúrgicos para recabar el éxito entre el público. Se destaca especialmente la elaboración de la trama y la construcción de personajes, siempre vistos con ternura a pesar del escepticismo del autor con respecto al amor y las convenciones sociales. Teniendo como referente una de las narraciones amorosas más tristes de la historia de la literatura, Jardiel logra al mismo tiempo provocar la risa y suscitar la reflexión.

This article is a study of the nineteenth-Romantic character Margarita Gautier and her survival as a cultural icon during the 20th Century within the novel, the theater, the opera, television and the cinema. There is also an analysis of Jardiel, both as a parody of Dumas´ famous novel and within the context of the theater prior to the Spanish Civil War, while expounding the importance that this had in helping him become an stablished author. To this end, we ponder about the extent to which the play meets its initial objectives, which is to renew the Spanish theater during this time period. The play is placed among Jardiel´s literary production as to analyze how he employs his dramatic resources in order to achieve his success among the public. Plot and character development are especially emphasized as they are always viewed with tenderness in spite of the skepticism with which the author views love and social conventions. By having one of the most sad love stories in the history of literature as a model, Jardiel achieves to spark off laughter while at the same time it causes one´s own reflection.
