    Toda ética parte del hecho social y busca un orden social cuyos medios o fines pueden ser abarcados bajo ideas como la justicia, la libertad, el amor, la creación, etcétera. Sin embargo, en Vida y época de Michael K, el novelista sudafricano J.M. Coetzee propone una reflexión ética valiente y paradójica, que parte del aislamiento y de la falta de cualquier categoría paralela o siquiera parecida a la del sujeto occidental. No se trata de una ética de la liviandad, sino de la ética de la pérdida, la automarginación y la autoexclusión. No se trata de ganar el bien, ni el reino de los cielos, ni la justicia, sino de enfrentarse a la singularidad sin sentir la tentación de superarla o destruirla.

    Ethics assumes the social sphere as a fact, and pursues a social order in which the means or the ends may be summarized under the ideas of justice, freedom, love, creation, etc. Nonetheless, in Life and Times of Michael K, South African writer J.M. Coetzee poses an ethic meditation both bold and paradoxical insofar as it is based on isolation and the lack of any category that resembles that of the Western subject. It is not an ethics of lightness, but rather an ethics of loss, of deliberate destitution. This ethics is not about the Good or the Kingdom of Heaven, nor about justice; but rather about encountering singularity and not being tempted to overpower it.
