Resumen de Tertiary and Quaternary Segments of Nahal Malih, Samaria: a case of a composite hydrographical basin

D. Nir

  • The basin of Nahal (wadi) Malih in the eastern part of Samaria Mountains, near the western flanks of the Jordan Rift Valley, is a scene of a quaternary drainage system superimposed on a tertiary one. Nèogene conglomerates and wide, fully developed channels and valleys bear evidence of the tertiary stages. These ancient segments were abandoned in consequence to the occurrence of younger, neogene/quaternary faults, contemporary of the development of the quaternary Jordan Valley. An analysis of the conglomerates and the landforms reveals the capturing of the neogene river system and its diversion to the quaternary-actual one.
