Resumen de The Middle Paleolithic of Adlun and Ras el Kelb (Lebanon): First results from a study of the flint industry

Lorraine Copeland

  • The death of Professor Garrod has greaty delayed publication of the excavations where she detected three prehistoric sites on the Lebanese coast. A brief analysis is given here of the main features of the flint industries at the Adlun sites : Yabrudian and Levalloiso-Mousterian at Bezez Cave, and two Amudian facies and a later Yabrudian at Abri Zumoffen. In addition, progress is reported on the study now in course on the industry at the Paleolithic site of Ras el-Kelb. This provides an opportunity of comparing two very different Levalloiso-Mousterian facies. A tentative chronology for the three sites, which were occupied at the end of the last interpluvial and beginning of the last pluvial, is suggested. It is based on connections with raised beaches as recently defined by P. Sanlaville.
