We have analyzed 79 stomach contents of birds captured in the basin of the Prado river between August and November 2004, from 385 m to 1800 m. Our aim was to know the aliment of some birds, the diversity of nourishment and the main factors that infl uence the diet of that community. We obtained samples of 69 contents (82.3%) of 65 species. We identifi ed 2296 fragments (average = 35.3 fragments / species), corresponding to 21 items, with a total mass of 3.71 g of consumed material (average = 0.058g/species). Th e analysis of these components indicated that the birds consumed mainly insects (46.86%), seeds (42.94%), vegetable material (10.2%) and unidentifi ed organic material (MONI-value not quantifi ed). Species that consumed biggest diversity (H) of food were Chlorostilbon gibsoni and Ramphocelus dimidiatus.

It was observed that some species showed a preference for certain types of food. It was shown that the diet of birds could be infl uenced by several factors such as the season of the year, the elevation gradient and the type of habitat.
