When discussing the servile population in archaic and classical gortyn, two areas of disagreement are apparent :first, what difference, if any, is there between a "dolos" and a "woikeus" (which I translate traditionally as "slave" and "serf")? Second, what opportunities existed for either or both groups to own property, to marry and divorce, and to participate directly in litigation? The two questions are not unrelated, but it is best to begin by treating them separately.
