Aunque actualmente los pacientes diagnosticados con cáncer tienen mayores posibilidades de sobrevida e incluso de curación, existe aún una proporción considerable de pacientes que no logran este objetivo. En esos casos, la terapia se dirige al control, es decir, al periodo libre de enfermedad más prolongado posible. Esta terapia es un arma de doble filo para el paciente y su familia: por un lado está la esperanza de desafiar las probabilidades y por otro el temor a la recurrencia. Las estadísticas pueden predecir una experiencia de vida de acuerdo con el diagnóstico, la patología y el estadio de la enfermedad, pero pueden pasar por alto la respuesta del paciente. La enfermera en oncología no es puramente técnica, pues la experiencia física y psicosocial de cada individuo es única e impredecible, por lo cual se requiere una gran interacción enfermera-paciente.

Although this moment the patients diagnosed with cancer have greater possibilities of overlife and even of definitive treatment, a considerable proportion of patients still exists who do not obtain this objective. In those cases, the therapy goes to the control, that is to say, the free period of possible prolonged disease more. This therapy is a weapon of double edge for the patient and his family: in one side is the hope to defy the probabilities and by the another one is the fear to the recurrence. The statistics can predict a experience of life in agreement with the diagnosis, the pathology and the stage of the disease, but they can ignore the answer of the patient.
The oncological nurse is not purely technical, because the physical and psycho-social experience of each individual is only and unpredictable, thus requires a nurse-patient great interaction.
