En el Eje Palmira-San Josecito, localizado en parte del Área Metropolitana de San Cristóbal, desde sus orígenes, los barrios de ranchos han ido conformando territorios segregados espacial y socialmente, signados por la pobreza del hábitat y de sus habitantes.
Indagar acerca del significado que este hábitat tiene para sus habitantes constituye el propósito de este trabajo. Diversos encuentros con sus residentes nos permitieron comprender el sentido del estudio. Los hallazgos señalan que las deficiencias en términos físicos, urbanos, legales y sociales que caracterizan y convierten a los barrios de ranchos en un disminuido hábitat no influyen en su significado. El barrio de ranchos es percibido bajo un concepto integral. La vivienda es un sublugar, que forma parte de un sistema mayor: el lugar del asentamiento. Sus habitantes sienten el medio donde habitan con un hondo sentido. El barrio de ranchos es un lugar de habitar.

Metropolitan Area, from their origins, the informal settlements have been conforming segregated territories socially and space, signed for the poverty of the habitat and of their inhabitants. To investigate about the meaning that has this habitat for their inhabitants constitutes the purpose of this work. This objective was reached through a series of meetings and interviews with several residents of these settlements. The results of this investigation indicate that the informal settlements are perceived as a holistic system despite their physical, urban, legal and social limitations. The home is a component of a bigger system, the settlement, as perceived by the inhabitants of these settlements. The inhabitants of these squatters feel a deep connection with their habitat that makes the settlement a place to inhabit.
