Throughout Iranian film history, female characters were constructed within a masculine paradigm, contained within the limits of the home. Then in the 1990s, along with the social shifts occurring at that time, that paradigm would open up to include an urban setting, breaking with the historical passivity of the female in traditional Persian art forms. This study analyzes the evolution of those shifts through the work of one of the most emblematic directors of new Iranian films: Dariush Mehryui.
