The main objective of this essay is to propose the use of the word "proto-industrial" as a model and verify its pertinence as a methodological tool. This word has been normally used in the Mexican economic history as adjective and concept. Therefore I will look into how close a fit there is between the proto-industrial word as a model, concerning the demo-economic elements, based on a concrete empirical evidence: the demographic registries of the 8th and 13th cuarteles of Guadalajara city which were drawn up in 1821. On this basis I will try to determine whether the proto-industrial proposal is capable of generating coherent explanations of the first manifestations of the industrialization process in western Mexico.
