    El mundo del siglo XXI ha situado al deporte en un lugar preferente. En todos los continentes, es un fenómeno universal. Si bien la práctica del ejercicio fisico es muy antigua, la competición deportiva tal y como nosotros lo entendemos hoy, nace inequívocamente en Grecia hace tres mil años. Intentamos subrayar en estas páginas de un lado, el mérito que tiene el genio creador griego, algo que al deportista y al espectador actual les pasa totalmente inadvertido. Por otro, el ingente esfuerzo no sólo de invención y creación, sino también de la primigenia organización fruto de aquella civilización helena, a cuyas herencias sólo la ignorancia nos permitiría sustraemos. Por otro Jado, nos hemos esforzado en poner de relieve la modernidad, o mejor la actualidad o vigencia que muchos de los avatares que rodearon en Grecia a las competiciones agonales y que siguen teniendo total vigencia en el deporte de nuestros días.

    The XXI century world of sport has placed in a prominent place. In all continents, is a universal phenomenon. While physical exercise is very old, athletic competition as we understand it toda y, clearly born in Greece three thousand years ago. We try to emphasize in these pages on one side, the merit of Greek creative genius, something that the athlete and the modern viewer happens completely unnoticed. Furthermore, the enormous effort not only of invention and creation, but also the fruit ofthat organization primitive Hellenic civilization, whose legacy only ignorance would allow us to escape. On the other hand, we have endeavored to emphasize the modernity, or better now or efTect that many ofthe surrounding avatars in Greece Con tests and competitions continue full force in the sport today.
