RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF HUMAN NEUROCYSTICERCOSIS DETECTED BY COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IN THE STATE OF SANTA CATARINA, SOUTHERN BRAZIL: 2002-2004 When cysticercosis involves the central nervous system, it is called neurocysticercosis, which is considered to be the most severe infection of the human brain. This paper describes the prevalence of neurocysticercosis in human patients submitted to computed tomography (CT). A total of 5,775 CT scans performed between 2002 and 2004 were analyzed, and the data were grouped according to gender, age, and place of residence. The CT scans were performed at a radiology clinic in Lages which covers 18 municipalities in the mountain region of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Among 5,775 patients submitted to the CT scan 1,377 (23.85%) were diagnosed with neurocysticercosis; of these 736 (53.45%) were female and 641 (46.55%) male, 873 (63.4%) lived in Lages, and 662 (48.1%) were aged between 31 and 60 years. Of all CT scans, only one revealed active cysts, whereas 1,376 showed calcification. The youngest patient was 1 year old and the oldest one was 91 years old. It may be concluded that the implementation of educational programs for the eradication of the taeniasis/cysticercosis complex is of utmost importance.
