Prevalence of intestinal parasites in landfill employees in the city of Concordia, Santa Catarina, Brazil

    • Developing countries and developed present a serious problem of administration of the garbage produced daily. This garbage is stored in great exposed territorial areas the atmospheric conditions, which potentiate the contamination of the natural resources, such as the sources of underground waters, these places are called of landfill. The diseases caused by parasites can be transmitted by contact with the skin, ingestion of eggs, water and polluted foods, situations these that can be involved at these places. The objective of our work was to determine the occurrence of parasites eggs in samples of landfill employees of Concordia city. This work was accomplished with 18 samples of feces and then analyzed by spontaneous sedimentation exam, proposed by Lutz. A 100% (18/18) of positive samples for parasites were found. The prevalence of each parasite species in this study, where 72.22% (13/18) indicating the presence of Entamoeba sp., 61.11% (11/18) presence of Ascaris lumbricoides and 44.44% (8/18) presence of Giardia lamblia. Therefore, as the population of this study is in daily contact with aspects that facilitate the contamination and parasitosis transmission, it should have a larger care of the sanitary authorities to reduce the number of people attacked by those illnesses
