  • This paper deals with the notion of transitivity, which has been studied from various perspectives throughout the history of French grammar. It concentrates on the specific problems of verbal transitivity, a notion which is defined on a syntactic-semantic level as a type of “ rectionalâ€? scheme determined by the valency of the verbal lexeme involved (syntactic transitivity). It is also defined as a gradual notion that can be applied, to a greater or lesser extent, to any verbal construction which meets both certain previously established conditions and parameters (semantic transitivity). Starting from this basic idea, the author tries to associate transitivity with diathesis, complementation, valency and object. These concepts are closely related to â€" and therefore frequently confused with â€" the notion of transitivity and/or transitive construction.
