Painters have tended to concentrate on exterior realities rather than interior musings; but the issue of historical painting, where of necessity a fixed image must evoke a story taking place in time, reminds us of the issue facing painters of dreams. Whether they represent the dreamer and his dream, the dream alone, or the dreamer alone, at issue is the choice of a still image to evoke a temporal series.
