  • Perec or Robbe-Grillet use the architectural figure of the building textually, in a manner that shows that novelistic meaning depends on a missing slot, mirror image of a surplus, as Deleuze would say; such work leads to reconsidering buildings in 19th century works of Balzac, Zola, or Brontë - where "extra" but "empty" rooms figure prominently.
