  • Resumen
    • 91054 Erlangen, Germany Abstract Direct renin inhibition blocks the reninangiotensin system at its rate limiting step and has been introduced as a new antihypertensive tool to treat arterial hypertension. Multiple studies have shown that the blood pressure lowering effect of aliskiren monotherapy is similar to those in other monotherapies. Notably, in some studies aliskiren monotherapy was found to be more effective than ramipril 10mg in elderly hypertensive patients, than HTCZ 25mg in obese hypertensive patients and than irbesartan 300mg in patients with metabolic syndrome. The combination of aliskiren with diuretics, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers always effected an additional fall in blood pressure. For aliskiren 24h (and even 48h) blood pressure control has been documented.
