Rosset and Rorty use literary examples - Malcolm Lowry, Proust - to illustrate their conceptions of chance in a world from which necessity is necessarily absent. Yet these works problematise contingency through their systems of representation: both philosophers thus suggest that the problem of contingency conditions the way writers represent.
