Aby M Warburg saw himself as someone whose field of research covered all cultural phenomena connected with the image. Warburg's starting point for all his researches was the art of the Renaissance. In creating the notion of the Pathos Formula Warburg wished to establish a criterion for measuring the distance between the representation of emotion in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. Today the question is whether this Warburgian notion of the Pathos Formula represents a stable theory and whether one could associate it with a method that could also be used by Rhetoric.

Aby M. Warburg se voyait lui-même comme un chercheur dont le domaine d'investigation s'étendait à tous les phénomènes culturels ayant un rapport à l'image. Warburg a toujours eu pour point de départ à ses recherches l'art de la Renaissance. En créant la notion " Formule du Pathos ", Warburg voulait créer un critère de différence pour mesurer la distance entre la représentation de l'émotion au Moyen Âge et celle à la Renaissance. Or la question se pose aujourd'hui de savoir si cette notion Warburgienne qu'est la " Formule du Pathos " est une théorie stable, et si l'on peut y lier une méthode qui serait encore utilisable par la Rhétorique.
