El presente texto es una aproximación a la sanidad militar de los ejércitos de los Austrias. Toma como referencia comparativa el Hospital de los Militares de Mesina fundado al acabar la Guerra de Mesina (1679) y cuya vida activa concluye en la Guerra de Sucesión (1713). Se estudia en él la organización de la atención sanitaria a los soldados desde el cam- po de batalla hasta los hospitales de retaguardia. Vemos la estructura organizativa, adminis- trativa y del personal, junto a los medios materiales con los que cuentan y su forma de finan - ciación.
A través del estudio apreciamos la evolución de la sanidad militar desde el núcleo, inci - piente, del reinado de los Reyes Católicos hasta la aparición de una estructura compleja que se consolidará en el siglo XVIII con la llegada de los Borbones, con un desarrollo similar en la Monarquía Hispánica y otras monarquías europeas, y coincidente con la conformación de la sanidad civil y sus hospitales. A su vez es un proceso paralelo a la aparición, organización, estructuración y consolidación de los ejércitos que, pese a lo polémico del término, podría - mos llamar permanentes, que se desarrollan con el crecimiento del Estado real.

The following document is an approach to the military health services system of the armies of the Spanish Habsburgs taking as benchmark the Hospital of the Military of Messina, founded at the end of the War of Messina (1679) and whose activities ceased during the War of Spanish Succession (1713). The text looks into the health care organization for soldiers from battlefields to rear guard hospitals. We see their or ganizational, administrative and staf f structure together with the material resources they count on as well as their financing means.
Through this study we appreciate the evolution of the military health services system from its grounds during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs until its emer gence, which will consoli- date in the XVIII century with the arrival of the Bourbons, showing a similar development all over the Hispanic Monarchy and the other European monarchies; furthermore, it coincides with the shape of the civil health system and its hospitals. At the same time, it is a parallel process to the rise, organization, structuring and consolidation of the army that, despite the controversy of the term, we could call permanent, and which develop as the real Estate grows.
