    Carlo Ginzburg, in 1988, considered present historiography as beholden to a regimen of truth by quotation that had distanced itself from the task of making the past present to make it believable, a position he was to nuance; but the distinction between the two modes is a valid one for analyzing the writing of history – if analysis reveals their intertwining in ways that ultimately open out onto the relationship between history and fiction, whose history is still not told.

    En 1988 Carlo Ginzburg considérait que l'historiographie moderne se soumettait à un régime de la preuve par la citation documentaire qui l'éloignait de la tâche de rendre l'histoire présente pour la rendre crédible ; s'il devait plus tard nuancer cela, la distinction constitue une entrée valide pour analyser l'écriture de l'histoire ¿ si l'analyse révèle plutôt leur imbrication selon des modes qui ouvrent sur le rapport entre fiction et histoire, dont l'histoire reste à faire.
