A pesar de que las películas de William Dieterle tienen el reconocimiento general de los cinéfilos, sus escritos antifascistas sobre Hollywood publicados durante la Segunda Guerra mundial resultan bastante desconocidos. El presente dossier incluye cuatro de sus más importantes artículos escritos entre 1940 y 1944, y tratan fundamentalmente del valor pedagógico y las cualidades democráticas del medio cinematográfico en tiempos de guerra. De especial relevancia resulta “Hollywood y la crisis en Europa”, un excelente análisis económico de la industria cinematográfica, que fue el único artículo de un cineasta publicado en la revista de la refundada Escuela de Frankfurt

Despite the fact that William Dieterle’s films are relatively familiar to filmgoers, his critical writings as an antifascist intellectual based in Hollywood during the years of the Second World War have remained quite unknown. This dossier includes four of his most important articles, which were written between 1940 and 1944, and dealt mainly with the pedagogical value and the democratic qualities of the cinematic medium in times of war. Of particular interest is “Hollywood and the European Crisis,” an excellent economic analysis of the film industry, which was the only text written by a filmmaker to be published in the journal of the renowned Frankfurt School.
