Con ocasión de los acontecimientos ocurridos el 11 de septiembre de 2001 en los Estados Unidos, se ha extendido de forma extraordinaria en todo el mundo la amenaza del terrorísmo marítimo. Esta amenaza incluye la posibilidad de que los buques y las instalaciones portuarias puedan ser utilizados por criminales y redes terroristas, y de que puedan ser transportadas armas de destrucción masiva en los contenedores para ser utilizados en atentados terroristas. La comunidad internacional ha respondido a la necesidad de incrementar la cooperación global para garantizar la protección marítima a este respecto, adoptando medidas concretas dirigidas a prevenir los atentados terroristas en el mar. En este estudio analizamos las actividades que las organizaciones internacionales han desarrollado en el ámbito de la protección marítima contra el terrorismo.

Just after the events of 11th of September 2001 in the United States, maritime terrorism has emerged as a formifables threat in the world. The thread is compounded by the use of maritime vessels ans shipping lanes by criminals who are often in league with terrorists, with the possibility that weapons of mass destruction could be transported by sea in containers and used as a terrorist weapon. The international community has answered to the need to increase the global cooperation to ensure the maritinme security, adopting specific measures to prevent terrorist acts at sea. In this paper, we analyze the activities of the international organizations in the field of maritime protection against terrorism.
