    No es fácil, aunque así lo parezca, definir lo que es la naturaleza. ¿Es simplemente esa mezcla de geología, agua, vegetación y las diferentes manifestaciones de fauna que componen el paisaje? El adjetivo natural presenta problemas parecidos. Nuestra definición es subjetiva, dependiendo de la ideología y la perspectiva de cada uno. Para las personas que escribieron en las revistas inglesas de interés general del siglo dieciocho, existía una profunda ambigüedad en su relación con los fenómenos naturales que les rodeaban. Por una parte, idealizaban la naturaleza, elevándola casi al nivel de lo divino, pero, por otra parte, veían cómo sus compatriotas dedicaban gran parte de sus esfuerzos a alterar el paisaje natural de su país, sin hacer comentarios al respecto.

    It is not easy, though it may appear so, to define what nature is. Is it simply that mixture of geology, water, vegetation and the different sorts of fauna that make up our landscape? The adjective natural presents us with similar problems. Our definition is subjective, depending on the ideology and perspective of each person. For those persons who wrote in general interest English magazines in the eighteenth century, there existed a profound ambiguity in their relationship with the natural phenomena that surrounded them. On the one hand, they idealized nature, raising it almost to the level of the divine; meanwhile, on the other hand, they saw how their countrymen were devoting much of their time and effort to altering the landscape, without making any comment on the matter.
