    The evolution of cruising in the Mediterranean and its implications for port-city relationships. Critical fctors and open issues in the case of Venice. - In recent years the Mediterranean's position within the global cruise market has improved very markedly. The dynamism of the sector - a high rate of demand growth, modernization of infrastructure etc. - has significant impact on the port city's economy, spatial structure, landscape and image. The case of Venice confirms the importance of these elements.

    Indeed,the dramatic development of the cruise market has acted as a fundamental lever in the spatial and functional transformation of the Venice waterfronts. Moreover, the development of the sector has opened the way to more co-operative approaches between the port sector and urban policy. However, the most recent tendencies that are driving the sector's evolution are responsible for significant environmental and territorial problems as well. In particular, the local port industry has to meet the need for continuing improvements oi infrastructures and port areas in order to sustain the growth in de- mand and accommodate the trend towards gigantism that affects the industry at a global level. These elements are causing new problems, and need new management policies and tools. The most problematic aspect is related to the problem of port expansion in the lagoon. With regard to this, new conflicts between port and urban policy, particularly in the planning process, are emerging.

    L'évolution des croisières en Méditerranée et les implications pour les relations port-ville. Facteurs critiques et questiones ouvertes du cas vénitien. - Ces dernières années, la position de la Méditerranée dans le marché global des croisières s'est beaucoup améliorée. Le dynamisme du secteur (taux élevé de croissance de la demande, amélioration des infrastructures etc.) a un impact très important sur l'économie, sur l'organisation fonctionnelle et spatiale, sur le paysage et sur l'image des villes portuai- res. Le cas de Venise confirme l'importance des éléments précédemment énumérés. En effet, le fort développement du marché des croisières a agi comme le levier fondamental pour la transformàtion du waterfront vénitien. En outre, le développement du secteur à ouvert la voie à des approches coopératives entre le secteur portuaire et la politique urbaine. En meme temps, les dernières tendances qui guident l'évolution du secteur sont responsables d'importants problèmes environnementaux et territoriaux. En particulier, le secteur portuaire vénitien est appelé à satisfaire les demandes continues d'àdaptation des infrastructures et des espaces, dans le but de répondre à la croissance de la demande et è la tendance au gigantisme qui caractérise l'industrie des croisières au niveau global.

    Ces éléments sont la cause de nouveaux problèmes et des nouveaux instruments de gestion doivent etre définis. L'élément plus problématique est lié à l'expansion du port sur la lagune. Des nouveaux conflits entre politique portuaire et politique urbaine sont en train d'émerger par rapport à cette problématique, surtout dans la sphère de l'aménagement.
