    Los grupos sociales ladinos que residen en la cabecera del departamento de Totonicapán han venido identificándose históricamente con la “modernidad” frente a una mayoritaria población indígena k´iche´ con quien han convivido desde el siglo XVIII. Estos ladinos, antaño hegemónicos, han construido la historia oficial del lugar, “domesticando” rasgos indígenas de forma instrumental para crear la identidad local –totonicapense. La rearticulación de ladinidad y modernidad se representaría en un baile local, el Convite navideño, donde estos sujetos sociales incorporan elementos de la cultura global y rasgos culturales k´iche´s que son domesticados para redefinir la identidad totonicapense.

    Ladino social groups that reside in the main city of the province of Totonicapán have been identifying historically with the “modernity ” vis–a-vis the k´ichean population, with whom they have lived with since XVIII century. This ladino people, priorly hegemonic, have constructed the official history of the location, by “domesticating” indigenous features in an instrumental form to create the local identity –to - tonicapense. The rearticulating of ladini - dad and modernity is represented in a local dancing, the Christmas Convite, where this social subject incorporate global cultural elements and k´ichean cultural features that are domesticated to redefine local identity
