With the restoration of the portuguese monarchy, in 1640, the land border between Portugal and Spain was dramatically reactivated. Hence, the Portuguese crown put forth an ambitious plan to fortificate the Alentejo border, with the collaboration of several French and Dutch engineers, hired for the effect. In an environment of great activity and theoretical-pratical confrontation, a young Portuguese man, of Olivença (Olivenza, in Spanish), João Rodrigues Mouro, started out (1648) as a military engineer, in his birthplace, moving afterwards to Setúbal, where he led a long and useful career.

Con la restauración de la monarquia portuguesa, en 1640, la frontera terrestre entre Portugal y España fue dramaticamente reactivada. La corona portuguesa llevó, entonces, a cabo un vasto programa de fortificación de la frontera alentejana, con la colaboración de ingenieros holandeses y franceses para eso contratados. En un ambiente de gran actividad y de confronto teórico-practico, un joven oliventino, João Rodrigues Mouro, se inicio (1648), en su tierra natal, como ingeniero militar, se desplazando, despues, para Setúbal, donde a hecho una longa y provechosa carrera.
