  • Research on parental beliefs concerning early development flourished in the 1980s, and is presently much less frequent. The present paper suggests some reasons for this decrease. First, atheoretical tools were used (developmental timetables), which produced scattered results and were difficult to interpret unequivocally most of the time. Second, concerning mechanisms of development, clear-cut distinctions (nature vs nurture) are too global to be heuristic. Research needs probably to focus on some restricted domains, and to acknowledge contradictory mechanisms.
