Serge Nicolas

  • This paper concerns the introduction of scientific psychology in french Universities. Théodule Ribot (1839-1916) introduced officially the new psychology in the Sorbonne in 1873 presenting his two theses on Hartley and on Heredity. A first point concerning the topic of the theses is that they can be considered as an indicator of the beginning of new trends for the University. Second, a detailed presentation is provided of Ribot's two theses which constitute an important act for french psychology. Third, the reception of Ribot's theses at the Sorbonne and by the french public is examined in order to take into account the context of the time. Finally, the question of heredity treated by Ribot, which constitutes one of the major themes in psychology, is discussed.
