    Este artículo se conforma expresamente como un alegato razonado en pro de la plena integración de las imágenes fotográficas en el análisis histórico. Con este propósito, he abordado el campo de investigación que más he frecuentado en los últimos años, el de la historia de la infancia, centrándome particularmente en dos cuestiones relevantes de la misma: imágenes del trabajo infantil y representaciones de la mortalidad infantil. El artículo se divide en dos grandes apartados. En el primero se recorren sucintamente los principales argumentos y opiniones acerca de la interpretación de la fotografía, procedentes de fotógrafos, historiadores de la fotografía, críticos de fotografía y arte, teóricos de la imagen, antropólogos e historiadores sociales y culturales.

    En el segundo apartado, se aborda el análisis de casos concretos, sin perseguir presentarlo como modelo.

    This article presents an argument in favor of the full integration of photographic images within historical analysis. From this perspective, I have approached the history of childhood, the field of research which I have concentrated on, in recent years. My focus is on two major topics: images of child labour and representations of infant mortality. The article is divided into two main sections. The first succinctly lays out the main arguments and opinions concerning the interpretation of photography from the point of view of photographers, historians of photography, photography and art critics, image theorists, anthropologists and social and cultural historians. The second section focuses on the analysis of specific cases, without seeking to present it as a model.
